prisoner recovering from stage 4 pneumonia experiencing medical neglect and put at risk of exposure to covid-19

My name is Sandra.* I’m currently incarcerated at Santa Rita Jail. Currently I’m experiencing side effects. I was at the hospital in 2019 and I recovered from stage 4 pneumonia which I’m experiencing side effects from. Heavy breathing, night tremors. I’m getting up in the middle of the night coughing bad, unable to breathe easy. I’ve put in 4 different medical slips in March. Neither of those times where I’ve been seen. I’ve also grieved them 2 times on that matter.

Here they are still bringing in new people from the street and they are not quarantining them. Just this morning, 2 girls were brought in, in the middle of the night at 3 AM.

They do not give us cleaning supplies to clean up our pods. They do not give us self cleaning items such as sanitizer or wipes. They are very negligent. They only offered us masks, one time only! If you didn’t get one that day, they said that you will not be able to receive one “Sorry, Oh well, Don’t come to jail” that was their remarks. New girls that came in, did not receive masks either. So basically if you didn’t get a mask that day, you were pretty much outta luck.

I am trying to get my medical situated here, and that is not working. I am very worried that if I was to catch this virus in here, I would not be seen by anybody and I’d probably get worse and catch pneumonia again. Which I caught the last time and almost passed away. I was on a breathing machine there and I was never able to get my therapeutic follow ups due to being incarcerated here.

The workers in the kitchen are unmasked. The only thing they’re giving workers in the kitchen are gloves to work with, and the person with the Coronavirus in here, passed away two days ago. The workers that were working in the kitchen, were some of the people from the area where the person was infected at. And they are, on the men’s side, still working them. Also they had people that were in Reds (high/max security) working in the kitchen also, at that time. Which are people that aren’t supposed to ever be released to work at this facility. It’s uncleanly.

One of the deputies in the kitchen was coughing really bad, I witnessed this myself. They still remained at work and didn’t get a time off, they remained coughing, coughing on other people, and sneezing.Very unsanitary. That’s such an easy way for the Coronavirus to get spread through that kitchen. It’s horrible there! I wish that someone could come and see the way that that place is ran. It’s not sanitary at all. It’s not very sanitary for us to eat off of trays that people are rotating with, and we don’t know where the people are coming from. They’re taking new people to the kitchen daily, because they’re in need of workers. They don’t even test them, they don’t test people that come in. It’s a big accident waiting to happen here.
